This is the beginning of a new decade. An arbitrary selection of time that has been used for generations to denote 'something' important. What hyperstitious energy do I want to promote into being for this decade. What energy have I promoted in the last one. I guess I have been an active participant of 3 decades so far. The 1990's, the 2000's and the 2010's.

1990's

Madison Dreamtime

2000's

Dreamtime YIHS Madison Bay Area

2010's

NYC NOLA Berlin?

2020's

LA NOLA Berlin

Breaking my life up like that I can sort of make sense. But I fear its an arbitrary distinction that probably ends up creating more issues at some other position.

I could also break up my time into periods of “what I thought I wanted to do with myself”

Obsessed with 'girls' Travel the world permanently Be a crust punk and live on the remains of the system Start a Start up? Hipster life? Go into archiving Become a successful artist 3D Photographer Make music videos Be a mad scientist Say fuck it to everything I held dear and become a cold hard scientist International researcher of how culture and technology are a cybernetic system

Those are all pretty big pivots, though some of them overlap more then others. I want to have more purpose in my life. It feels like its starting to happen if only slowly. I think this will only happen by having many conversations.

I watched a number of movies on my plane ride, the first one of which was a documentary by the name Eden by Daniel Blaufuks that had a part about pirate TV stations and that was inspiring.

posted about it on the fedi here too

Today's Numbers: I spent the whole 24 hours in airports so I didn't buy much. Met some sweet folks who gave me a ride from the airport to Wedding and then I got a four pack of metro tickets for €9 and used one. When I got to Charlies house they made coffee, and then spent the afternoon helping them move into their new house. They bought me a delicious dinner for $8 in exchange for the moving help at Good Morning Vietnam

January 23rd 2020

Woke up and drank coffee with coconut creamer & evaporated milk with Angel Garcia and then they heated up some delicious shakshuka (شكشوكة = thank you) which is an arab egg dish with tomatoes and we talked about language and anatomy and breeding and menstruation.

“intuitive anatomy”

We had a bit more time before I had to leave so Angel gave me a tattoo. I looked through their flash book and I found a cockroach they had drawn.

Angel Garcia giving me a cockroach tattoo posted on the fedi here and on Angel's instagram

They said they drew it because they loved cockroach wings

“crunchy butterfly”

Then I called an Uber Pool and right as I got in someone called them and said they just took a ride with them and lost their airpods. And the driver responded “No English!” and hung up on them and I tried to explain again what the person had said but the driver didn’t understand any of what I said and implied it was a spam call. I looked around the back of the car and noticed the airpods in the crack of the seat and decided it seemed the driver wasn't going to do anything about this so I took them. I will see if they are registered with the persons name and try to return them if I can. Though I am on my way to the airport to fly to Berlin...

random rants while driving to airport

Thinking about the importance of kids having building toys like LEGOs or Lincoln logs and how if they have some that are the wrong size and don't fit together that's a good thing for to learn. And to show them the reasons there might be different sizes and dimensions of things and show how that is important.

Also maybe I should look for someone to write an autobiography of me, I wouldn't know how to write such a thing but I bet there are people who need practice writing in that way whomst might want to do such a thing. The story of Dreamtime and how it came about is super interesting. And that is intrinsically my story.

SIDENOTE: Where did these new age words like intrinsic and intuitively enter my vocabulary and how did that take place.

Could I write the story of myself? I believe I ca “do anything” so why couldn’t I? I guess its a question of timing and “devotion” to the idea. How much time do I really have to play with such an idea.

SIDENOTE: I am writing this on my iPhone using swipe to text on the keyboard. The dragging I make tell a story of language. it would be really interesting to record them for a day and have them separate fringe the letters themselves.

I missed my flight, to be continued...

Today’s Numbers: Drank one cup of coffee at Angel’s house, Angel gave me a white belt to replace the red one I lost going through TSA as MSY, they gave me one tattoo, I took an Uber to the FLL airport for $17.01 and a Lyft back for $17.83, and had to buy a ticket for $344 from MIA to Berlin cause I missed my flight, made 52 points on Duolingo Arabic

Scrambling

I finished sewing on a patch onto a Moogfest tshirt Paloma gave me years ago. I wanted to cover over the front because it had the word 'VOLUNTEER' printed on the front and it always made me feel uncomfortable to wear it and not be volunteering. The thing I sewed on was part of a pair of underwear I have had for years that were really uncomfortable. The only reason I kept them was that the fabric had an incredible pattern on it. Anyway now its a cool tshirt.

I quickly checked the fediverse after working on Arabic for a while and saw this lovely quote:

“This is an ominous time. Napster is long dead. Aaron Swartz, too. Software is bad, but it doesn't have to be. From BitTorrent to Mastodon, distributed systems leverage the power of many to astonishing effect. Among archivists, pirates reign.” -@garbados

I don't know what I was gonna say about this quote but it stuck out to me so I thought to include it in my post. I even asked permission and they were down so, here it is without comment. This is not a comment.

Today was the last full day in New Orleans before I journey back to Europe for Transmediale. The day went by quite fast, I feel like I was doing things all day long but not exactly sure what all I did. We went and had lunch at Red's Chinese and talked hung out there for a little while and then realized we had to do an annoying errand at the T-Mobile store, but I didn't have data to look up where one was. So we drove over to my studio and used the wifi outside and then headed to the one in gentilly. K got their phone turned back on and separated from my line that I was not going to pay while in Europe.

I haven't really packed yet, though I did narrow down my stuff quite a bit. I need to figure out what I am doing with this computer situation. I just told K I would trade my perfectly working Macbook Pro 2014 for their broken Macbook 2017. I figure I should be able to fix it but not sure how to do that yet. And do I bring it with me to Europe? Also I guess I need to wake up and fix the things for Hardi and save them somewhere so I can relinquish my laptop to K.

Ok I guess I should stop here and work on one of the other things. I don't want to feel overwhelmed tomorrow.

Today's Numbers: I made 108 points in Duolingo Arabic, I had coffee for free at Des, we bought fancy chicken and a beer for $17 at Red's Chinese, and bought gas for Sarah's car for $9.99

This post was deleted cause I clicked the wrong button but it mostly consisted of talking about writing my bio to Transmediale which I had “backed-up” from the email I sent them. Tried to recreate it later best I could.

Liaizon Wakest grew up in an anarchist commune in rural America. They can be found climbing into dumpsters from Mexico to Kazakhstan looking for trash to make art with. In recent years they have been focused on research into ethical technology and infrastructural anarchism. Find out more about them at wake.st (It will eventually exist on the Transmediale website here.

I found this patch me and Paloma made while we were in Berlin the first time, it had been sewn onto Paloma's bag, I forgot we both had different patches on our bags that we made together at Vetomat (an anarchist silkscreen studio in Berlin) on the fedi with more pictures

missing some of post cause I stupidly deleted it cause of bad UX (had some of it in my notes)

Sitting at Hare Krishna with my laptop out. A first time for everything. We just walked a a few miles through city park for the Lantern Parade. It was K's first parade they could think of. We ran into many friends. First person we saw was Corinne, I asked them about some trash I sent them a picture of. Then Sam Feather happened to be standing next to them and I hadn't recognized their new mustache. We talked about the pros and cons of New Orleans after I overheard Sam say to K

“Capitalism is everywhere, but I guess its a little softer here” -Sam Feather

After a while we ran into Cam Powel and Mike (who works at the Community Print shop) and Cam complimented my “saftey vest” that I was wearing. I had explained I had dumpstered it from the SoHo fire department when they remodeled. My timeline gets blurry.

Other people we ran into were Clay Mazing, whose candle I lit a number of times. Allison Reho, whomsted I had run into earlier when leaving my studio (they are a studio mate) and gave them a head lamp for the parade. Shirt (who is now going by the name Shape) gave me a beer, and gave K a smoke. Leslie, who complimented our plantain chip bag candle holder. Process, who I apologized for missing their clothing swap I had told them I was gonna go to. Toby, who gave me a coffee for free from their job as a barista this morning. Damon, who was wearing a scary costume and we talked about futuristic tattoos embedded under your skin. Prince Charlie, who I hadn't seen in a long time and we caught up briefly and K talked to them about their black face paint.

Some random people walking by talked about their friend whomst got a 'burning church' tattoo and I responded to them that it sounded like a lovely tattoo idea but they kept walking and didn't look over.

Afterwords we made our way to Hare Krishna with no data (and I discovered that google maps works to do full navigation with no data if you download the city first) and now we are back to the beginning of this post.

CJ and I, taken by K also on the fedi

Back in my studio, hanging with CJ who gave us water and I shared my skittles. I asked K while writing the above about the spelling of the word whos or who's or whose and they told me I should read the ' as a the dot above the i of is because who's = who is which is a good trick I think I learned as a kid but had long forgotten.

How to start this written document? It is after midnight. I just put in a Sonic Youth tape after finishing my daily Arabic lesson. I only got a few songs into Sonic Youth before I heard back from my friend Sunny so headed to their house to hang and hopefully write there. If not I will head back here to my studio cause I only just started writing.

[written at 3am] Of course, plans change, they always do. I am back at my bus now. I went to go get Hank's chicken and then went to Sunny's house. Shortly after I got there Sunny needed to take Musa for a walk so we went to walk along the levee. I really wanted to write this post after having this long conversation with Corinne about capitalism and Silicon Valley and how its all designed to be like it is. Lots of little things designed to fit together to build a house of cards. Sustainability is intentionally left out of the diagram.

I was drawing connections between Fluxus and Neoism and how the art world revolves around the ego and elevating individualism as opposed to community action and flattening hierarchies.

“What 'new' loan words are you using? A word from another language [could be a computer language or #conlang] that you have integrated into your every day life.

I started using 'Habibi' a few years ago when I started trying to learn #Arabic. When I first went to Romania when I was 14 I learned 'noroc' and have been using that instead of cheers ever since.” question posted on the fedi

and the first response I got was:

my dad used to say that something would abend when it went wrong. I thought this was a normal word. Only in my 20's did I discover it's a COBOL programming term for “abnormal end of execution” -@sixohsix

Sitting here eating a found slice of pizza at Poor Boys while K dances to tacky gay house music. They just saw I was doing this and wanted to come give me a massage while I wrote this blog post. Cant say no to such a thing. We spent most of the afternoon working on their website filthy.ooo. Went home around 5 and ate lentil soup and chicken. Responded to some messages, K took a nap, tried to do my Arabic studies and was having a hard time but powered through. Starting to feel the progress paying off.

I spent half an hour or so (while K was napping) explaining what the genre of Noise Music consisted of to Sarah’s friend Kota who is currently visiting for a week. Oh actually remembering the order better. I had to finish laying out this Sorani Kurdish translation of the brochure I designed for Space21, the Sound Art festival in Iraq. That was what I was doing for like two or so hours before I even started Arabic lessons. It feels good to have a bunch of projects scheduled lately. Maybe I just need to keep that up for my mind to feel fulfilled. The Corinne project has been nice to be involved with, makes me want to distribute the rest of my stuff to other projects that will actually utilize the stuff. Getting rid of everything I am not actually going to utilize in the foreseeable future frees me to focus on the foreseeable future. It really is that simple.

(updates from the next day that I forgot)

Today's Numbers: I bought a coffee for $2.75 at HiVolt cafe, and put the remaining 0.25 in the tip jar, I made 110 points in Duolingo Arabic, pulled out $20 dollars to get into a dance party at Poor Boys and then the ATM charged me $3 dollars fee, and when Venmo alerted me it said I was charged $25.50, the venue said they would give us a discount cause they didn't have change for $100, so they charged us $16, and then I bought a $3 dollar drink and tipped $1

Going backwards through the day: I just finished my Arabic studies and it felt good like its getting fun. Leaning whole sentences and such. Klaas just left my studio, we talked about all sorts of potential Berlin sharing plans. The idea of sharing a studio so they could use my studio here and I could use theirs there was discussed. That would help each other out greatly. I gave Klaas a bunch of power cords for their music project. Tried to give them some other stuff but they snuck out with a small pile.

bad picture of klaas I took to send to a friend (on the fedi)

Prier to meeting Klaas at Okay Bar I was going through and sorting all my new photographs I found in the dumpster.

I had started doing that when Corinne was here. Corinne was over for many hours going through stuff. They filled their van again with all my shit for the project. Damon was over helping too. We went through many many boxes.

We really made a last minute dent in getting rid of stuff. Oof stuff can be a crazy nightmare. I am feeling like things are looking up though. Moving forward in unexpected ways.

I really need to try to write this blog post in two sections. Write for a bit in the first part of the day and then finish at the second part of the day. This is all a learning process. I don't know anyone who blogs every day. And I can see why, its a lot of work to set aside time every single day to do anything let alone something like writing.

Was just distracted by looking at my phone and opening Instagram, I clicked on a Bernie Sanders ad and they were talking about the election. I was surprised cause I didn't realize the beginning of the primary was soo soon. The first states in the Democratic Party primary are in March. I guess I should be in the States for that. I wonder where my vote would make the most sense. Since I don't really live anywhere I could just register where-ever riiight?

Today's Numbers: I made 167 points on Duolingo Arabic, I spent 14$ on beer and two tacos at Okay Bar and pinned a dollar on a my friend Tricia's shirt for their birthday

I am getting tired of talking about my day here. I want to use this space for something more. I have been getting feedback that people have been reading my longer-form writing here and that makes me want to utilize this space for more then just recounting my steps. But then that means I have to look within and think about a topic to cover every day and that is much more challenging. Listing activities is so straight forward. I learned last night from a reply to a bug post that CJ Eller has been reading my blog. They are doing community management stuff with WriteFreely and I had already been following their blog since a few months back.

I really wanted to write about something more meaningful today but I didn't plan around my time well enough and am now exhausted and falling asleep. I guess I will just have to try again tomorrow. Good thing each day is a new day and we get a second chance every second.

Today's Numbers: I made 133 points in Arabi Duolingo. K bought me coffee at Levee Bakery (but they gave us the coffee for free cause we offered them to come look through dumpstered clothes after work)
